Recipe Steps

Preheat oven to 425°F.

Trim away ends from ½ small onion and peel. Grate on large holes of box grater. Add to large bowl.

Add ¼ cup bread crumbs, 4 tsp Worcestershire sauce, 1 ½ tsp kosher salt, and ½ tsp ground black pepper to onion. Stir well.

Add 1 ½ lbs lean ground beef. Mix with your hands to combine.

Place meat in a 9x13 baking pan. Pat meat in an even layer, pressing up to edges of the pan. Wash hands thoroughly.

Bake until browned and cooked through, 14-18 minutes.

Cover meat with 6 slices of cheddar cheese. Return to oven and bake until melted, 2-3 minutes.

Keeping rolls connected, carefully use a serrated knife to cut 1 pkg of 12 Hawaiian sweet rolls in half lengthwise.

Remove top from rolls and set aside.

Use two spatulas to lift meat patty on top of the bottom buns.

Squeeze 12 evenly spaced dabs of ketchup on the meat. Top with 12 pickle slices.

Cover meat with tops of rolls. Slice along the lines that connect the rolls.

Recipe Notes

  • For a quicker meal, replace grated onion with 1 tsp onion powder.

  • Testing tip: all rolls are not created equal. King's Hawaiian sweet rolls will be just the right size but other brands might be slightly off and require trimming to fit.

  • Use pepper jack cheese and mayo on half the pan for a slightly spicy alternative to the classic.

  • Dessert with dinner changes a weeknight into something way more fun, and really, what's better than sliders with a shake?
